World Press Photo is an independent non-profit organisation, founded in the Netherlands in 1955. Its aim is to support and promote internationally the work of professional press photographers. Over the years, World Press Photo has evolved into an independent platform for photojournalism and the free exchange of information. Besides managing the extensive exhibition programme, the organisation also runs a number of educational projects. World Press Photo realises its objectives by organising the largest and most prestigious annual press photography contest in the world. With over 80,000 photographs entered, the World Press Photo contest effectively provides a yearly status report on the state of affairs in the world.
Peter Bakker: "TNT has an interest that goes beyond its business objectives. TNT is a people's business. We care for what goes on in the world, as is also evidenced by the recently announced partnership with the World Food Programme to help fight world hunger. In order to be able to make a difference in any of the bigger issues facing the world today, we need to identify these issues and confront society at large with images that tell the story behind them. That's where World Press Photo comes in."
British photographer Tim Hetherington wins premier award. The international jury of the 51st annual World Press Photo Contest selected a color image of the UK photographer Tim Hetherington as World Press Photo of the Year 2007. The picture was taken 16 September 2007 and shows a US soldier resting at "Restrepo" bunker, named after a soldier from his platoon who was recently killed by insurgents.
"This image shows the exhaustion of a man - and the exhaustion of a nation," says jury chairman Gary Knight, and adds "We're all connected to this. It's a picture of a man at the end of a line." Fellow juror MaryAnne Golon commented: "I use all my energy to have people notice bad things. There's a human quality to this picture. It says that conflict is the basis of this man's life."
Moving the World

WFP is the largest humanitarian aid agency in the world. In the course of the World Food Programme's 40-year struggle against hunger and malnutrition, it has grown to become the largest humanitarian aid agency in the world. In turn, it has also become the UN's logistics arm. To deliver food aid where and when it's most needed, WFP has turned the complex business of moving emergency relief into a fine art. In 2003, WFP food aid reached 110 million people in 82 countries. Under ‘Moving the World’ you can read all about TNT's commitment to WFP.
