PTT Post takes measures against anthrax infection

18 October 2001 - PTT Post has implemented a number of measures in the last few days to handle situations where anthrax infection may pose a risk. The measures are intended to protect employees as well as mail recipients. PTT Post has recently handled a number of incidents concerning suspicious mail items, but after further investigation the items were proven not to contain the anthrax bacteria.

PTT Post has provided a special anthrax protocol to its distribution employees (workers at sorting centres and letter carriers). The protocol gives information on the symptoms of anthrax, risk management in the mail process and procedures to follow if a mail item is considered suspicious. The protocol not only involves specific steps to take (isolation, removal, sanitising the area, etc.), but also treatment of persons who had physical contact with the item.

The protocol also suggests providing protection, such as latex gloves, to employees with cuts, sores or insect bites on their hands, as these factors contribute to vulnerability. It also suggests providing sufficient medical assistance 24-hours per day at all sorting centres (for example, by contracts with emergency wards of nearby hospitals or municipal clinics).

All sorting centres have been provided with kits containing protective and disinfecting products (latex gloves, bleach, disinfecting soap and plastic bags). In addition, a team of at least two persons has been appointed at every sorting centre to coordinate incidents, a shower has been reserved for decontamination, and a room has been designated for securing suspicious items.
