What is the status regarding full opening of the Netherlands’ postal market?
On 24 March the Dutch Senate voted in favour of full liberalisation of the Dutch postal market as of 1 April 2009. TNT has carefully prepared the company for full liberalisation and is ready to face increasing competition. The Government has provided guarantees for decent labour conditions, and to maximize its efforts to establish a level playing field on the European postal market as soon as possible. TNT will closely monitor these guarantees and welcomes the support of Parliament.TNT has become the subject of takeover bid speculation. Can you tell us more about it?
TNT has been listed since 1998. We have seen many rumors during these ten years. It has always been our policy never to comment on such speculation and market rumors. What is the impact of fuel prices on TNT’s performance?
In our mail operations, the impact is negligible. In our express business, we use a transparent fuel surcharge that recovers most of fuel costs rises when they occur. Whatever the fuel price, we constantly review and enhance our networks and fleet to optimize routes and reduce fuel consumption. For example, TNT seeks to find the right balance between air and road transportation, using road whenever possible. On the long term, TNT is exploring alternatives to fossil fuel. We are testing electric, hybrid, bio-fuel, or CNG-propelled vehicles in the Netherlands, Germany, China, India, Australia, and the UK. Besides adding more fuel-efficient vehicles to the fleet, we promote economic driving by training drivers and managers.Where does TNT stand on the opening of European postal markets to competition?
TNT supports an open market with fair competition, protecting the interests of customers. Such an open market will encourage efficiency, innovation, quality, and truer prices, thus ensuring the future of the postal sector.Under European Union rules, most mail markets including France must be open to competition from the start of 2011. Twelve of the EU's 27 states, mainly in Eastern Europe along with Greece and Luxembourg, can delay this to 2013.
TNT has repeatedly stated it is ready for a full opening to competition, provided there is a level-playing field. That is still not the case due to barriers such as licenses and VAT regimes. TNT is calling on the European Commission to counter obstruction of competition in the European mail markets.
What is TNT’s response to scam emails and fake websites?
TNT is taking action against fake websites and fraudulent emails abusing TNT’s identity to mislead internet shoppers. The emails, claiming to be from TNT, usually ask advance payments for goods ordered online, before TNT allegedly ships them. Scammers may also request an advance payment before the release of some lottery prize. We strongly advise our customers to contact their local TNT customer service department in case of any doubt as to the authenticity of such website or email, and to forward any suspicious mails to TNT’s Security department at e-crime@tnt.com. Furthermore, we encourage customers to report the case with the local police. Some instances have actually led to arrests.
We have had some success in closing these fake operations down, thanks to the alertness of TNT customers and to our good relationships with Internet service providers. In the second half of 2007, TNT closed down over 1,500 scam websites and email addresses abusing the group’s identity.

What does TNT do for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP)?
In 2002, TNT and the World Food Programme (WFP) started a partnership to help fight hunger worldwide. As the largest corporate sponsor of the world's biggest humanitarian aid agency, TNT is committed to contributing its employees, skills and resources to support WFP.In 2008 alone TNT invested €5.9 million in kind in its partnership with WFP. Employee fundraising provided an additional €1.8 million. TNT spent another €1.1 million in new ‘Moving the World’ initiatives (Jatropha Malawi).
TNT is putting its skills and knowledge to good use for a good cause, the fight against world hunger. Above all, TNT supports WFP by sharing knowledge and giving hands-on support by contributing experts in transport, logistics, warehousing, storage, distribution, and project management. For example, TNT provides emergency support to WFP in countries hit by disaster. In 2008 197 TNT employees were involved in emergency operations, of which 20 were specially trained and skilled Emergency Response Team Officers. They assisted in emergencies in Mozambique (flooding Zambesi river), China (earthquake), Myanmar (cyclone), Haiti (multiple hurricanes) and India and Nepal after the flooding in September. In total we shipped over 4,000 metric tonnes of goods during emergencies.
Second, we manage awareness and fundraising initiatives among our employees and customers. We also help create awareness of the programme (e.g. Walk the World) and help WFP put hunger on a broader agenda (World Economic Forum).
An evaluation performed in 2007 concluded that TNT and WFP together wanted to look into fighting hunger and looking for solutions to hunger in a more sustainable way. This resulted in a fourth pillar of the TNT – WFP partnership which we named ‘Transport for Good’. This pillar focuses on helping WFP to become better in transport and / or logistic solutions and use them in development.
Did TNT do anything to help the victims of Aila cyclone in India on 25 May 2009?
TNT India has distributed medicine and shelter materials to about 15,000 people displaced by cyclone Aila at three refugee camps near Calcutta. The company has also set up a medical relief camp in Ghospur, a severely hit village, where doctors are treating people with malaria, diarrhoea, and skin infections.Since TNT launched its CO2 emissions-cutting programme Planet Me in August 2007, what have been the achievements?
At TNT, we feel that our Corporate Responsibility consists of managing the impact that our operations have on the environment and society. As a transport company we emit a significant amount of CO2 and hence take the responsibility to address this.We have made progress in three areas. Firstly, we understand our carbon footprint better, which allows us to develop a framework for measuring our CO2 emissions.
Secondly, we are taking action to reduce the emissions resulting from our operations, leading to substantial CO2 savings of 20,000 tonnes in 2007. In May 2008 alone, we introduced more than 100 electric or hybrid electric trucks in China, Australia, the Netherlands and the U.K. Other good examples are the realisation of a green depot in Veenendaal, the Netherlands, or the launch of our global Drive Me Challenge to determine the TNT Pick Up & Delivery (PUD) driver with the safest and most environmentally friendly driving style.
Thirdly, we have created tools to engage our employees at work and at home. In the Netherlands, for instance, we have teamed up with an electricity provider to offer all our employees the opportunity to switch to ‘green’ electricity and gas at home at a lower cost.
Benefits range from prouder employees to more eco-efficient behaviours.
What is most important, beyond our effort, is that climate change is on the global agenda. Take, for instance, the EU Emissions Trading Scheme, or the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon’s statement that reversing the effects of climate change was “the defining challenge of our age.”

Fax: +31 20 500 7515As a privately owned company, what are TNT’s views on universal service obligations?
TNT is attached to the notion of public service. Every Dutch person must be able to enjoy the basic mail services at affordable prices. The Dutch government has commissioned TNT to deliver this “universal service.” TNT is bound to offer specific services, such as the daily handling and delivery of single-item letters not exceeding 2 kilograms and of single-item parcels weighing up to 10 kilograms. TNT Post is also responsible for the network of mailboxes and postal outlets. How does the Dutch postal universal service compare with the rest of Europe?
The service requirements in the Netherlands exceed the minimum European level. That goes for the frequency of mail delivery (six days a week in the Netherlands, compared with five according to the EU) and the speed of delivery (next-day delivery in 95% of the time in the Netherlands, whereas the EU does not impose any level). Can you update us on the debate regarding the full opening of the Netherlands’ postal market?
The Dutch postal market has been fully opened to competition on 1 April 2009. TNT has carefully prepared the company for full liberalisation and is ready to face increasing competition. TNT will carefully monitor the Government’s guarantees for decent labour conditions in a free postal market and has asked the Government to keep pushing for a level playing field on the European postal market.- Express
How big is TNT Express?
TNT’s express division is among the world’s largest express operators and the number one business-to-business express company in Europe. Worldwide, it delivers 4.4 million parcels, documents, and pieces of freight a week to more than 200 countries. With 2008 revenues over €6.6 billion, TNT’s express division continually expands its air and road network in Europe, Asia, Australia, South-America, and the Middle East, connecting international routes to fast-growing domestic road networks. The division employs over 75,000 people, runs 26,600 trucks, and flies a fleet of about 40 aircraft. It operates a network of 2,376 depots and sorting centers. What is the strategy of TNT Express?
TNT’s business environment has become tougher and less predictable since 2008. Customers ship less in a slow economy and they increasingly trade premium air services for more economical road services. Volatile oil prices add to the uncertainty.
TNT is nonetheless pursuing its strategy to focus on networks, while adapting to the new demands. The immediate focus is cutting costs without sacrificing customer service, and adjusting networks to deal with lower volumes. On the mid-term, the Express division intends to consolidate its leading position in Europe, while expanding in China, South America, India, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.
TNT Express has many strengths to build on. First, customer budget constraints make its set of road networks around the world even more appealing. Second, the company has broadened and harmonised its product offering to cover more industries and customer types, including freight shippers. Third, TNT’s penetration of domestic and regional markets helps mitigate the decline in intercontinental flows.
Is TNT Express active in the business-to-consumer market?
TNT is known as a world leading business-to-business express distribution company. However, over the last few years customers have increasingly requested TNT to make residential deliveries too, as companies change their business models to capitalise on the dramatic growth of e-commerce. The trend is indisputable and the significant growth in the business-to-consumer market is set to continue. To meet this growing demand, TNT is reviewing its operations and systems to meet customers' requirements with the same quality and reliability of service that they have come to expect from TNT for their business-to-business deliveries. Is TNT Express active in North America?
TNT Express offers its customers international express delivery services to and from the United States and Canada. The company has a nightly transatlantic flight to New York (a B-767 operated by ABX Air) and makes next-day deliveries in 17 large North American metropolitan areas, including New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston and Toronto. To carry out these activities, TNT Express operates three international air gateways in New York, Los Angeles, and Miami, and 15 depots.
TNT Express, however, has no direct presence in the U.S. domestic express market. The division cooperates instead with leading American companies, such as Con-way Freight, to deliver freight (up to 7,000 kg per consignment) everywhere in the country. For lighter shipments, TNT mostly uses its own infrastructure, which covers over 70% of its pickup and delivery requirements.
